Breast Cancer 101
a primer for researchers and patients
Samm McDonald President Emeritus, Susan G. Komen San Diego
Wednesday, September 14, 2011, 5:30-8:30 pm
Great advances have been made in breast cancer diagnosis and treatment in
the last 25 years. Komen for the Cure® has played a critical role in these
victories:
- early detection rates have increased from less than 30% to nearly
75% for women over 40
- pre-metastasis five-year survival rates are now 98% compared to
74% in 1982
- 2.3 million people are breast cancer survivors, the largest group of
cancer survivors in the U.S.
There is still much to be done. Breast cancer is not cured. 1 in 8 women in the
U.S. continue to be diagnosed with breast cancer, more than 1 million could
die over the next 25 years. Worldwide, about 25 million women will be
diagnosed with breast cancer and 10 million could die over the next 25 years.
Come to hear the Komen presentation on Breast Cancer Risk, Screening,
Diagnosis and Staging, Treatment, Support, Complementary Therapies,
Clinical Trials, and New Findings. Continue to learn the latest updates on the
Komen website, a primary resource for the most current information.
